Great unit, would recommend!
The Garmin Striker 4 is a great fish finder and GPS that I would highly recommend for boaters who travel. I recently used it for the first time on a 10 mile canoe trip, and I couldn’t be happier with its performance. I was able to plot my course on a paper map to get the coordinates of each leg, and then add all the waypoint coordinates into the unit the night before creating a route.
The next day on the water, the GPS unit kept track of where I was, how long it would take to get to the next waypoint, and how long it would take to get to the final destination. It also told us our speed, which is very valuable for trip planning.
I have two boats I use, one is a rowboat for fishing where I mounted the transducer on the electric motor propeller, and a canoe where I mounted the sensor in the hull using a foam mounting piece. In both cases, the fish finder worked well, and I love that I can swap the unit between the two. Note that I use velcro to make the group swappable between the boats, but permanently mounting it would not be hard at all. The base is very friendly, and you can adjust it to face any direction.
During our trip, we were rained on, and the Garmin had no problems in the rain. It held up very well.
If you just need a fish finder for local lakes and you’re not traveling in your boat, and you don’t need to use waypoints, this is probably overkilling. But if you’re looking for a great GPS and fishfinder in one, this is a fantastic unit, and I highly recommend it.
A quick note about my setup, I built a battery box to power my charger, but I know there are nice little battery boxes premade available that might be more hardy and compact than the one I built. You will need to explore power options and be able to wire the unit to whatever power source you choose. I like that flexibility.

I got this for my Kayak.
It is the easiest to use the electronic device I have bought in a long time.
The menu and scroll are simple to navigate the display is easy to see (I am old with bad eyes) and the screen is big enough to see.

This is actually a really cool thing to have when your fishing off the bank or dock. I was throwing lures left and right and wasn’t catching anything. When those waves reach the transducer, the software calculates how far away the object is. It does this by analyzing how many seconds it took for the waves to bounce back from the obstacle. The beauty of some of these fish finders is that you can cast the transducer when fishing from shore.
Luckily, you don’t have to worry about doing any math. The fish scanner does that for you. On the screen, you’ll see how deep the fish are based on the readings the transducer did. If there are quite a lot of obstacles in the way of the device, you can pretty much deduce it’s the right spot for fishing.
Do Portable Fish Finders Work?
Yes, portable fish finders do work. The higher-end models can detect small fish with a lot of precision. They can also tell a rock or bank of sand from a school of fish, so you’re never induced in error. The cheaper models will still accurately tell you where fish are. Yet, they’re not as sensitive as other items and will only be able to detect medium-sized fish (larger than 10 centimeters).

If it is, go ahead and drill another hole next to it for your fishing line. The second way is by clearing snow piled on top of the ice sheet, making sure there are no cracks or bubbles in the ice, and placing the scanner here. If your sonar tells you that’s a good place to cut a hole, go ahead and do that. While the readings may not be as accurate with some models in this situation, it’s the most hassle-free way of scouring for a good fishing spot.
Kayak Fishing
This is one of the most popular uses for portable scanners. Yet, it can get a little tricky with installation—and not all devices will work on a kayak.
First, make sure your fish scanner uses either rechargeable or disposable batteries. If so, great! Some models need to be plugged into a 12-volt battery, like that of a boat or car. With those, you won’t be able to go kayak fishing.
Second, find a way to mount the scanner on the kayak. Larger, clunkier models may come with suction cups at the bottom that you can attach to the front of the kayak. You could also find a spot on the floor of the kayak to set up your fishfinder. Alternatively, if you’re using a scanner that sends the readings to your phone, you could attach your phone to the fishing pole. There are ways of making this less precarious.
